What We Say

Journal Entry: Sun Dec 11, 2005, 10:18 PM
I remember way back when I first started taking shots. The wonderful feeling of discovery for myself. It was the first time that I had something in my life that gave me purpose and meaning. That was almost twenty years ago. It has only been this past year since I've regained the courage to lift a camera to my eye, that I have felt the need to to express something in my images. I've gone through a dry spell as of late and I realize that part of this is because I had little to say. It wasn't enough to take clever shots with unique angles or unusual perspectives. I had gotten bored with myself and my images.

I had never really considered myself an artist. I think that was because I had never realized that being an artist usually means conveying a messege or idea in ones work. I had no idea that I had anything to say for any reason, let alone a means to say it. Now when I look at some of my work I can see it plain as day. I see my own feelings of isolation and waywardness in this world. I see my own loneliness and fear. I see those things that philosophically I feel to be true and don't expect nor want a cure for. I see my own battle with what some call the "human condition" Oh what the fuck! The human condition LOL. How silly, how blah blah blah psudo intellectiual. I've always hated that phrase!

I wondered for a long time why I couldn't even force myself to take "pretty" shots or "sellable" shots. It's because they're meaningless to me. They say nothing. They're pretty pictures - thats it. Not that theres anything wrong with pretty pictures. Sometimes I wish I could do it. But it's just not happening at the moment. I'm not interested in selling anything.

Anywho... time to sleep.

:) actually all the ir filter does is filter out visible light so that only infrared is sent to the camera, but it is necessary. digital cameras are sensitive to infrared, but there is glass built into the camera that blocks most of it. My camera (the minolta dimage 7) has a really weak glass filter, so my camera can see infrared better than most, but some people remove this filter entirely to have a really good "infrared only" camera. However just about any camera can do infrared with long enough shutter speeds. If you want to get into IR i suggest going digital all the way. I've tried IR film and failed miserably due to its complexity. The only problem with digital is you will have to do some photoshop tweaking to get the color effects, unlike some "color" IR films.

you probably knew most of this, but its kind of a passion of mine recently, so i like talking about it. :)
~Gemini62167:iconGemini62167: Jul 26, 2005, 9:02:41 AM
I didn't know that there was a filter available that could emulate that effect. This is good to know! I'm not that well versed on a lot of the technical aspects of infrared or long shutter speed shooting in digital. It becomes more apparent that there are certain things about digital that react a bit different than film. It throws me off sometimes LOL.
~eniad:iconeniad: Jul 25, 2005, 7:18:10 AM
The problem with digital infrared (done in photoshop) is that the images come out really grainy, unless you have a super clear image to begin with.. depending on the type of camera you have, you may just be able to slap on an infrared filter and have some long exposure times, but i think its worth it.. i was fortunate enough to get a camera that's especially sensitive to infrared, so i have quicker shutterspeeds. best of luck with it :)
~Gemini62167:iconGemini62167: Jul 24, 2005, 10:27:20 PM
I've never shot infrared and always wanted to try! I've been looking into techniques to mimic the effect with digital images, but haven't tried what I've found. As soon as I do I'll post 'em and you can let me know if they work or not.

Wow! Anthropology!!!! I wish you all the best!! :) :) :)
~eniad:iconeniad: Jul 24, 2005, 8:20:51 PM
Thanks! They are infrared, yes. And I'll be studying anthropology..:)
